Synopsis:
Six years ago federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire.
Now the world at large thinks Samantha has developed a rare skin disease, a disease which forces her to quit her day job and stay out of the light of the sun. Working the night shift as a private investigator, Samantha is hired by Kingsley Fulcrum to investigate the murder attempt on his life, a horrific scene captured on TV and seen around the country. But as the case unfolds, Samantha discovers Kingsley isn't exactly what he appears to be; after all, there is a reason why he survived five shots to the head.
Review:
*Sigh* I feel another Series Addiction coming on...Oh, heck who am I kidding, it's way past the point of "coming on" now. I have to admit I'm hooked on the Samantha Moon (Vampire for Hire) series by J.R. Rain. I've finished Vampire Moon (Book 2), and I'm now reading American Vampire (Book 3), after only a week from the time I downloaded Moon Dance. I'd probably already be on Moon Child (Book 4), except I have a day job, and kids to feed, and a house to clean and I have to sleep.
Like a lot of addictions, this one started with a freebie - Moon Dance is a free download on Amazon. I've recently received a Kindle, and I was surfing for books by Patricia Briggs (another series addiction), when Moon Dance popped up. I took a look, saw the $0.00 download price, gave a mental shrug and thought, "What can I lose." As simple as that and I was pulled into the story.
The book starts out describing Samantha Moon folding laundry in her darkened house and watching Judge Judy, waiting for 3:30 pm to roll around so she can go pick up her kids from school in her Ford Windstar Minivan...Not your typical dangerous vampire right from the get-go. And the book continues to surprise you that way through to the end.
Samantha is a likeable, feisty woman and loving mother, trying to come to terms with her "condition." The book is first person narrative, so you get an up-close-and-personal inner dialogue that's both humorous (laugh out loud funny sometimes) and spot on from a woman's point of view. Samantha's confusion and, dare I say, angst regarding what she is and what that means to her family is well written. Her attempts to live a normal life are realistic to the situation (I know it's Urban Fantasy, so realistic probably isn't the right term but I'm using it anyway).
While this book could use just a little more proof reading, it's easy to overlook whatever minor mistakes you come across, because the story is so intense and the characters are completely appealing. And, since Mr. Rain introduces main characters from his other books in this series in very interesting, tantalizing ways, I'm going to be forced to read those series too...And so the addiction continues. Darn you J.R. Rain - Darn you to heck.
Loved It! (A Good Read)
