Thanks so much for stopping by the Authors' Cafe today, Tiffany. I'm very excited to host you and your book, Temptation by Fire!

Okay, I see you've got your coffee and breakfast claw, so let's get right to the interview.

At what point in your life did you realized that being an author was no longer going to be just a dream but a career you were going to turn into reality?

First of all, thanks so much for having me here today!

I hoped to make writing a career after I completed my first novel—I’d proven to myself that I could do it! But it wasn’t until a long time after finishing that (now trunked) novel before I took steps to make writing for a living a reality.

Which of your characters is most like you?

I think that all of my characters have a little bit of me in them, but only pieces. I’m not quite as sunny and positive as Alice from Don’t Bite the Bridesmaid, but I’m also not nearly as tough and jaded as Beatrice from Vampire Games. I’m certainly not as studly as Karson from Temptation by Fire. The same kind of comparisons hold true for me and all my characters, I think.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which character from Temptation by Fire would you want with you?

Karson. He’s super hot and he’d totally get us home ASAP. Or at least build us an awesome shelter.

Where do you write?

I mainly write in my home office. Sometimes I move the party out to the living room couch.
J

Do you have any “rituals” you go through before you write?

First, I tend to turn on a song I find inspiring. The song varies depending on what I am currently obsessed with (lately it has been Brave by Sara Bareilles). I jam out to that while drinking coffee or tea, reread a bit of what I wrote last, and then jump in.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) of Temptation by Fire to write and why?

I loved writing Karson and Ava’s interactions, especially the banter. But there is a part late in the book where someone does something very unexpected and it tears one of the characters up in a really harsh way. I loved writing that part because it is so pivotal and (to me) emotional.

How did you come up with the title?

The book was originally titled A Dangerous Glimpse, but my editors (rightly so) thought it didn’t communicate the romance part of the story very well. So I started listing titles. SO MANY TITLES. After running them by my critique partners, and checking them to make sure they hadn’t been used before—or at least not recently—for other books, I sent a short list of my favorites. Temptation by Fire stuck, because it suggests both the paranormal suspense story and the romance. And the fire imagery is important in the story.

What would YOU like your readers to know about this book or you in general?

I’d love for readers to know that at its heart, this book is about a woman who is discovering her path in life. And about a man who must learn he’s worthy of love—and that sometimes love means putting your faith in the strength of another person.
J

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?

Keep writing. Keep learning. Keep getting critiques. Basically, keep working at it. And don’t be afraid to examine your own work critically if it doesn’t seem to be working in the way you’d hoped. Don’t be scared to try something new or crazy.

Do you have a favorite author?

So many. Too many to name really. But the first ones that come to mind are Nalini Singh, Gillian Flynn, Mercedes Lackey…and so many more.

What genre of books do you read for pleasure?

Lots of romance in many different subgenres. I also love fantasy (epic, urban, contemporary—I’ll read almost anything fantasy-based), psychological thrillers (e.g. Gillian Flynn), horror, nonfiction, and some literary fiction. I’m also reading more scifi as I’ve found some amazing authors and it’s a genre I hadn’t read a whole lot of before.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I’m pretty boring when I’m not in one of my worlds. I love to read and watch movies. I also enjoy some televisions shows. I especially love to hang out with my husband and my cats. I enjoy hiking. And I love to visit family when I can.

If all TV shows were real, what show (all time) would you most like to live in?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer…oh, wait. No. I’d die in like five seconds. Maybe Sex in the City, because those ladies are a hoot, and I love a show that includes strong friendships as a mainstay. Bonus? Almost no one dies in that show. J

Okay, it's been an awesome interview so far and now it's time for some . . .
Party dress or blue jeans? Comfy workout pants. Or jeans if I must leave the house.

Plotter or Panster? Both? It varies by book, but usually a little of each.

Print or e-Book? 95% of the books I read lately are ebook. For nonfiction, I prefer print.

Coastal walks or extreme sports? Walks.

Cookies or cupcakes? Both. And I’ll thank you kindly to leave the plate.
J

Super hero or super villain? Hero with just a tiny bit of villain inside.

If I had a free afternoon I’d . . . Read.

Peanut Butter: Crunchy, Creamy, or I hate peanut butter and am addicted to Nutella. Crunchy. And Nutella is yucky. Sorry, but…*shudder*

You suddenly realize you live in a haunted house. Do you:

  1. Run screaming for the door.
  2. Bravely go to a church, load up on holy water and try to get rid of the ghost.
  3. Set up ghost hunting equipment to capture phenomenon.
  4. Call in the Ghost Adventures crew so that you can ogle the lead guy Zac’s amazingly stiff hair when you’re not ogling his, uh physical attributes.
  5. Deny you have a ghost and just let it scare the bejesus out of your visitors.
I’d love to be the kind of person who chooses #2, but honestly I’d probably go for #1 or #4. J

Could you tell us five random facts about yourself?
  1. I think Hot Fuzz might possibly be the best movie ever made.
  2. I love cats. I
  3.  am from a small town but I’ve lived in (or around) big cities for most of my adult life.
  4. I prefer mountains to beaches. Sock monkeys freak me out.
