Tour Banner - Chain of Illusions

Rell has lived in the Shadow World for thirteen years as a Demon Bane, the formerly vivacious young woman now the demonic enemy of the immortal Bringers. But when she is given the chance to become human again—and a full-powered Bringer—Rell isn’t sure if it’s better to be a demon in the Shadow World or to risk her life for her humanity.

For two years, Siban had been tortured in the Bane prison, only to fall in love with the beautiful demon who helped him escape. Tormented by the thought of never seeing her again, he maintains a life of solitude. So, when Rell’s human body is rescued from the Shadow World, he will do anything to be with her—even if it means challenging death to become a Bringer, too.

But once their Bringer transformations and training are completed, Siban and Rell must join a mission to go deep in the Shadow World to rescue others trapped by the Demon Bane King. And what they discover destroys everything they knew about the Demon Bane. The lovers must learn to trust themselves, each other, and their new powers if they’re going to make it out alive.

Thanks so much for stopping by the Authors' Cafe today, Boone. I'm very excited to host you and your book, Chain of Illusions!

I’m so thrilled to be here. Thank you for having me!

At what point in your life did you realized that being an author was no longer going to be just a dream but a career you were going to turn into reality?

I started writing when my daughters were toddlers, they’re twins. My brain was turning to mush. But I don’t think I actually realized I was going to make this a career I got my first publishing contract with Entangled. I finally allowed myself to say, “Ah, now I’m a writer.” I couldn’t admit it before then.

Which of your characters is most like you?

In the Bringer and the Bane series I have to say it’s Jade. But with my other work it’s definitely Lisa Carron, my grim reaper. Basically I modeled her and her life after me, except my husband isn’t dead.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which character from Chain of Illusions would you want with you?

Icarus. He’s a uber powerful, sexy but ruthless demon, but he’s got wings and could fly us to safety…if he didn’t suck out my soul first.

Where do you write?

Usually in my office. I need my computer. Sometimes I’ll use a remote link and use my iPad and write in the living room. Those are really the only two places. I’m easily diverted so I need to keep my surroundings fairly diversion free.

Do you have any “rituals” you go through before you write?

Yeah, I play a game of Bubble Witch, Candy Crush or Pet Rescue before I start writing. I also walk the dog first to clear my head. That’s about it.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) of Chain of Illusions to write and why?

Okay, to be honest it was their first sex scene. It was pretty hard and fast against the stone wall. I get shivers just thinking about it.

How did you come up with the title?

The first book in the series had been called Resurrection, but there were a ton of books out there with that title. We ended up having to pull it and retitle it. I came up with Shield of Fire and followed that pattern for the rest of the series. Shield of Fire, Kiss of the Betrayer, Chain of Illusions, and the last two books will be Echoes of Ice and Throne of Bones. They all relate to the story in some way. In Chain of Illusions the Bringers have to work their way through the Shadow World and best a bevy of illusions the Demon King rigged up.

Ooooh - I LOVE the title Throne of Bones!!! What would YOU like your readers to know about this book or you in general?

The most important thing about the book is even though we’ve tried to make it a standalone, it’s part of a series, which is better read in order. The world is rather extensive, as is the Bringer and the Bane history. The secondary characters in Chain have evolved through the first two books and a lot of the intrigue has been building. I don’t know if I would have done that differently if I’d been a more seasoned writer because I really love that each book’s characters’ stories tie up but the overall battle continues through. Some people don’t like this but it was very intentional.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?

Keep honing your skills. Keep writing. And it’s never too early to start learning the business end of things. Also, don’t disregard self-publishing. It’s a great way to get more of your product to the reader and build a following in between book releases. But do it right. Learn from the best. Find a great editor and put a little money behind your covers. The publishing world is changing every day. Now authors have so many opportunities.

Do you have a favorite author?

I love Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. And I’ve found a few new writers who are on my fav list. Celia Kyle and Shannon Mayer.

I really the Stephanie Plum series too! What is your favorite quote?

“I’m not afraid of death. I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” Woody Allen.

LOL! What genre of books do you read for pleasure?

I’m a paranormal girl to the core. If it’s funny I’ll pick it up without having ever read the author before.

What’s the most amusing thing that’s ever happened to you?

Wow, do I have to pick one. My life is one comedy act after another. Okay, when I was a nanny in Greece I was learning Greek. I thought I was saying ‘sometimes’ when I spoke. But I was actually saying ‘condom’. Finally, after several months, somebody corrected me. Bastards!

That is too funny! What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I love to go to the movies but I rarely get to, so it’s always a treat. I go full hog with popcorn and soda.

If all TV shows were real, what show (all time) would you most like to live in?

Fantasy Island. I want to work and live on a beautiful tropical island that doesn’t seem to have any bugs, crime, or dangerous animals. Plus, everybody is always falling in love or getting a happy ending.

Awesome interview so far - And now it's time for some . . .

Party dress or blue jeans?Blue jeans

Plotter or Panster?Planster, I do both, but lean toward panster.

Print or e-Book? E-book. I love the instant gratification.

Coastal walks or extreme sports?Coastal walks. My body hurts from normal activity. I’d kill myself with anything extreme.

Cookies or cupcakes?
 Cupcakes

Super hero or super villain?
– Super Villain

If I had a free afternoon I’d . . . Watch TV and putter around my house. Either that or get a massage.

Peanut Butter: Crunchy, Creamy, or I hate peanut butter and am addicted to Nutella.Creamy, and I’d mix Nutella and my Jiff. Yummy.

You suddenly realize you live in a haunted house. Do you:

  1. Run screaming for the door.
  2. Bravely go to a church, load up on holy water and try to get rid of the ghost.
  3. Set up ghost hunting equipment to capture phenomenon.
  4. Call in the Ghost Adventures crew so that you can ogle the lead guy Zac’s amazingly stiff hair when you’re not ogling his….physical attributes.
  5. Deny you have a ghost and just let it scare the bejesus out of your visitors.
I'd totally call in the Ghost Adventurers. That would be awesome. I grew up in a haunted house. Don’t get me started with stories about that horrifying childhood.

Could you tell us five random facts about yourself?

  1. I love to be comfortable. Clothes, bedding, on an airplane, camping, I go out of my way to find things and soft stuff to make whatever I’m doing comfy.
  2. I’m one of those people who sneak candy into the movies.
  3. I named my daughters after the heroines in the first two books of my Bringer and the Bane series, Ravyn and Jade. They think I named the characters after them. Don’t tell them.
  4. A lot—I mean a lot of my friends and family end up in my books.
  5. Every year "lose weight and get in shape" is on my New Year’s Resolution List. I’ve yet to accomplish it. Maybe 2014 will be my year.
Thanks again for having me. This was so much fun.

It was great visiting with you, Boone - Thanks so much for stopping by the Authors' Cafe!!!
