A Kiss of Revenge by Natalie J. Damschroder #AuthorInterview #Giveaway

Tour Banner - A Kiss of Revenge

Marriage is completely over-rated, especially after Reese Templeton’s quadratic failure. She’d rather settle down to a solitary life of owning a bakery—after she tracks down the man responsible for her husband’s death and making her a human Taser full of enough electricity to short out a city block or send a man into cardiac arrest with just one kiss.

But alluring P.I. Griffin Chase is stirring up those feelings of need again. Only this time, her desire to be in his arms has nothing to do with her fear of loneliness and everything to do with the current charging through her body every time he looks at her…touches her.

Griffin hasn’t remained at Reese’s side just because of the spark that has nothing to do with her super-human talents. He’s willing to compromise his rock-solid principles so she can find closure. But before they can move on, he must help her catch her late husband’s killer, staying on track before she has a chance to exact her revenge. Because leading Reese to jail in handcuffs may just break his heart for the final time.

A Kiss Of Revenge

Griff smiled, and Reese’s stomach did a whole flippin’ somersault.

“I had meetings at the office in Boston and was headed back to DC. I thought I’d stop in and see how you’re doing.”

She grabbed a towel to wipe off her ice-cream-sticky hands. “Crestview is not on the way to DC from Boston.”

He shrugged and pointed at the butter croissants in the bakery display case. “Close enough.”

With a pair of tongs, she selected the biggest croissant and put it on a plate. “Coffee?”

“Of course.” He leaned against the counter and folded his arms. “You have anything for me to check out?”

She shook her head. “Not at the moment.”

“What about him?” He jerked his head toward the sidewalk outside, where Andrew Laine stood talking to the couple who owned the hardware store. “He giving you any trouble?”

“Not anymore. I told him I was married.”

She cursed herself as soon as the words were out of her mouth. Griff’s gray-blue eyes darkened, his rock-solid chin tightening. He’d obviously meant “trouble” because of Reese breaking the law, not because the chief of police had asked her out.

“You’re not thinking—”

“No!” She grabbed the towel again and swept it over the few crumbs and coffee drips on the counter, scrubbing vigorously at one dried spot. “I didn’t want to shove him too far away, that’s all. As long as he had an interest, I could keep track of what he knew.” Even if it kept her on edge and fried her equipment. “Anyway, he knows now. It’s fine. You don’t have to worry.”

“You pay me to worry.”

That wasn’t strictly true. Griff was co-owner of a multi-city private detective firm. He ran Chase Investigations in Washington, DC, where Reese had lived before the plane crash. Reese had hired him to help her track down clues about whoever had tried to kill her. But they’d become friends. He’d helped her through physical therapy, been a sounding board while she dealt with her new reality, and was the only person on earth who knew what that lightning strike had done to her body.

“I’m paying you to do research,” she reminded him. “You choose to worry.”

He grinned and shook back his shaggy dark-blond hair. “You make it hard not to.”

Another group came in, and he retreated to a table with his breakfast. Reese saw Kimmie eyeing him, and the young woman flushed at his greeting. Reese couldn’t blame her. He had the classic “hunk” build, with a broad chest, narrow waist, and shoulders shown off by a tight gray T-shirt. His gray-blue eyes were nothing special at first glance, but they sparkled at everyone and made his charming smile even brighter. No doubt that smile was what pinned Kimmie in place now, wearing a slightly stunned expression.

Reese wasn’t immune, but her friendship with Griff had become one of the most important things in her life. It was something she’d never had before, and she was going to treasure it as long as it lasted.

Thanks so much for stopping by the Authors' Cafe today, Natalie. I'm very excited to host you and your book, A Kiss of Revenge!

Thank you for having me! It’s great to be here!

Okay, I see you've got your grande non-fat no-whip mocha and butter croissant from Starbucks, so let's get right to the interview.

At what point in your life did you realize that being an author was no longer going to be just a dream but a career you were going to turn into reality?

It was really a one-shot moment when I was about 21. My mother was a writer, and I was told in high school and college that I had a talent for it, but I hated it. Until I got to start picking my own topics. I got a degree in geography and environmental studies and did an internship at National Geographic as a proofreader/editor, so I kind of had the idea that maybe I’d do something with words. When I wound up in Central Pennsylvania with NO job prospects, I realized that I loved to read more than anything in the world, so didn’t it make sense to become a romance writer? From word one the goal was publication and a career, and I never looked at it as anything else. “Passion” was a better word to define it rather than “dream.”
J

Which of your characters is most like you?

Unfortunately, all of them. LOL Not in the “she’s a great heroine, I’d love to be her friend” kind of way you want readers to feel toward your heroines, but in a “she has control issues and independence is always a driving factor” kind of way. The words usually used to describe me tend to start with “B,” and I often have to dial back my heroines’ tendencies to come on like the Terminator (to borrow a friend’s phrase
J).

LOL! If you were stranded on a desert island, which character from A Kiss of Revenge would you want with you?

Isn’t the only answer to this question (regarding a romance novel, anyway) “the hero!”? Yeah, it would have to be Griff. He’s one of those quietly strong guys who can always figure out the right thing to do without making you feel helpless or worthless. Plus, he looks great with no shirt. (Ref. the cover of A Kiss of Revenge)

Where do you write?

Mostly in my office, which is formerly a teenager’s basement bedroom. It’s a walk-out basement, though, so I have a window. But also, in front of the football game on Sundays from September through January (I’m a Patriots fan so it’s always well into January LOL) or in Starbucks or the Barnes & Noble café or the library when I need to get away from all the distractions.

Do you have any “rituals” you go through before you write?

Unfortunately, I kind of do. It’s called “clear your plate.” Or rather my inbox, my pile of household tasks, the dishes, the laundry, Facebook and Twitter and blogs and… LOL I always feel as if I need to have nothing else on my to-do list so I can write with abandon. Newsflash? It doesn’t work. Hence the need to sometimes go write somewhere NOT at home.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) of A Kiss of Revenge to write and why?

This is kind of a hard question because this book has gone through so many changes. On the first draft, I really enjoyed all of it because I gave myself carte blanche to write whatever seemed to work. It was a lot of fun exploring Reese’s history (three dead husbands!) and the challenges that came with being an electricity conduit after her plane was struck by lightning and the people who were getting in her way when she focused with laser intensity on revenge.

On this final edit after I sold the book to Entangled, there were two scenes that resonated. One was the first time she and Griff kissed (and he wound up in the hospital!) and the other was when she either had to face her greatest fear or abandon her quest completely. A very dark moment.

How did you come up with the title?

SO hard to come up with such an obvious title! LOL My original title was Black Widow, and that’s too common so I was advised to come up with something else that’s romancey and suspensey. That’s HARD. There are only so many love words, you know? LOL But the central suspense element is Reese’s quest for revenge, and a kiss kicks off her central conflict, so when it finally came to me I felt really stupid.

What would YOU like your readers to know about this book or you in general?

I love romantic adventure, the kind of heart-pounding, hold-your-breath story that’s full of action and a love story that makes the stakes both personal and extremely high. That’s my goal whenever I write a book, and I hope some of my readers feel I’ve succeeded.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?

I always say that if you can quit, do it. That’s kind of reverse psychology, because true writers immediately balk at the very idea, and that’s when you know you’re in this for the long haul, no matter what obstacles are constantly put in front of you. This business is both harder and easier to succeed in than it ever was, and to make it, you have to love it.

Do you have a favorite author?

Way too many to name! LOL I just finished a Rosemary Clement-Moore book and lamented that I’ve read them all. I devour Suzanne Brockmann and JD Robb and about a dozen others the day their new releases come out. And I’m really excited about debut author Victoria Smith.

What is your favorite quote?

“[They’re] more like guidelines than actual rules.” Captain Barbossa, Pirates of the Caribbean, Curse of the Black Pearl

Oh, that it just too funny - Love it!!! What genre of books do you read for pleasure?

Almost completely romance, mostly romantic suspense, contemporary romance, or paranormal romance. I also read a lot of paranormal or dystopian YA.

What’s the most amusing thing that’s ever happened to you?

That’s a new one! Usually it’s the most embarrassing thing! LOL Hmmm… Okay, I suck, because I can’t think of anything!

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Watch football or go to local pro soccer games with my family, go to movies, read, or watch TV. Very boring, my non-writing life.
J

If all TV shows were real, what show (all time) would you most like to live in?

Total no-brainer. Supernatural! I’d hold down the fort at the bunker and be the woman Sam and Dean come home to. I am so not a caretaker type, but I’d totally take care of those two.

Well, this has been an awesome interview so far - And now it's time for some . . .

Party dress or blue jeans? Blue jeans all the way!

Plotter or Panster? Neither, technically. I fly by the seat of my pants, so I’m a flyer. (I hate the word pantser! I sounds like I’m yanking down someone’s oversized sweats or something. LOL)

Print or e-Book? Both!

Coastal walks or extreme sports? Gimme the beach, baby.

Cookies or cupcakes? Cookies, fresh from the oven!

Super hero or super villain? Super hero.

If I had a free afternoon I’d . . . mill around with no clue what to do with myself.

Peanut Butter: Crunchy, Creamy, or I hate peanut butter and am addicted to Nutella. Crunchy, though Nutella is awesome.

You suddenly realize you live in a haunted house. Do you:

  1. Run screaming for the door.
  2. Bravely go to a church, load up on holy water and try to get rid of the ghost.
  3. Set up ghost hunting equipment to capture phenomenon.
  4. Call in the Ghost Adventures crew so that you can ogle the lead guy Zac’s amazingly stiff hair when you’re not ogling his….physical attributes.
  5. Deny you have a ghost and just let it scare the bejesus out of your visitors.
I’m gonna go with #5, though I don’t know if I’d be diabolical enough to think of it without the suggestion. LOL

Could you tell us five random facts about yourself?
  1. I’m the second of three generations of writers.
  2. When I do chores or have to drive a long distance (like, you know, a mile) I listen to podcasts about pro football.
  3. My cooking claim to fame is fresh-popped (on the stove) popcorn with perfectly applied butter and salt, another legacy from my mother.
  4. I lived in 17 different places in 7 years, but have now lived in the same house for 14.5.
  5. I may be the only person in the world who gave up on Candy Crush at, like, level 20.
Thanks again for having me today, and for this fun interview!

Yes, it was a real pleasure having you visit the Cafe - Please come back again sometime!!!
