Across the Line by Amy Lee Burgess {Guest Post & Giveaway}

When Councilor Allerton sends Stanzie to investigate a territory dispute between tiny pack Stony Fell and the British branch of much larger Mac Tire, it seems routine until someone sets a bear trap. A young Stony Fell man pays with the loss of his leg and now it’s up to Stanzie and Murphy to figure out who set the trap–and why–before more members of the packs are maimed.

Add a pair of star-crossed lovers, one love triangle, a grief-stricken bond mate with jealousy issues, and bad blood all around and the resultant twisted hell brew reveals the darker side of inter-pack politics that could prove too difficult–and dangerous–for even Stanzie to untangle.

We didn’t get three feet through the apartment door before he had me on the floor, tearing at my clothes. I ripped at his too. He kicked the door shut with his foot while simultaneously tearing at my clothes.

I sank my teeth into his shoulder and he yanked my hair hard.

“Are we playing rough?” he asked me.

For an answer, I head butted him. “That’s for being a giant asshole.”

We rolled over and over, smashed into the coffee table and knocked the lamp in the corner over. The crash of the bulb shattering was loud as hell.

“We’re not rolling around in glass.” Murphy lifted me up and I locked my legs around his waist. He staggered us over to one of the sofas.

We crashed down and the springs gave a protesting wail.

I scratched his back with my nails and he bit my lip until we both tasted my blood. It smeared across our faces as we kissed and he shifted so I straddled him on my knees as he sat upright.

“I love you,” he said as he tongued my earlobe. He sucked on it, sending a shooting burst of pleasure through my body.

“I love you,” I told him. When he lifted his head, his eyes gleamed with tears he blinked away.

“Say it again,” he begged. “Tell me again.”

“I love you.” I cupped his face with my hands. Beneath my fingers, his cheeks were smooth and warm. When his wolf colored his eyes amber, my wolf reached for his through me.

He pulled me down so he could kiss me and our lovemaking turned slow and gentle. His touch was reverent and lingering, his kisses a drug that pulled me into him, so my heart beat in time with his.

He brushed his lips, feather light, across my bruised jaw and bleeding lip, whispered to me in Irish as we moved together in a slowly building rhythm.

A rush of energy, my soul to his, and I buried my face in his sticky warm throat. God, I loved this infuriating man.

In Across the Line, Stanzie investigates a territory dispute between two packs. Mac Tire is the biggest and most powerful pack in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Each country has a branch with a separate set of Alphas, but overall Mac Tire rules the land.

Over the years, Mac Tire has been taking over smaller packs either through bonding Alpha pairs one from each side or, more commonly, simply by being bigger and offering more security.

Mac Tire owns several parcels of land throughout the United Kingdom which is held in trust by one member of the pack for his or her lifetime and then willed to a descendent. It is understood, however, that the land belongs to the pack, not the person.

Stony Fell is a new pack formed by disillusioned members of the Scottish branch of Mac Tire and one former member of the British branch.

Destined never to be Alphas if they stayed with the larger packs, these seven people formed Stony Fell so they would all have an opportunity to have children as Alphas someday.

Evie, the former member of the British branch of Mac Tire, inherited a small strip of land in the Lake District from her grandmother. Stony Fell use this land to shift and run as their wolves.

The British branch of Mac Tire insists that the land is theirs – held in trust by Evie’s grandmother and then Evie herself in the name of Mac Tire. Stony Fell interprets the law differently. The land is held in trust by Evie for whatever pack she belongs to. In this case, Stony Fell.

It’s a gamble on their part.

The packs can’t settle this dispute on their own so they call in the Great Council. Stanzie, as Advisor to Councilor Allerton, is sent ahead to scout the situation and report to Allerton before he arrives to make a decision.

Things get out of hand when someone sets a bear trap on the border between the disputed land and the youngest member of Stony Fell is caught in it. At the time he was running as a wolf with his girlfriend, a young member of Mac Tire.

The dispute turns very ugly and Stanzie is caught in the middle. She has to figure out whether it was someone from Mac Tire or Stony Fell who set the trap. She also struggles to come to grips with the realities of big packs versus smaller ones. Until she bonded with Murphy and joined the Irish branch of Mac Tire, she has always belonged to small packs and the idea that they can be taken over by larger ones and the injustices and prejudices that arise when this happens sometimes, appall her.

She finds herself at odds with Murphy who believes that larger packs have not only the right, but the obligation to take over smaller packs. He believes larger packs offer more security and stability and he’s right, but people from the smaller, absolved packs can become marginalized.

Will Stanzie discover who set the trap? Can she and Murphy overcome their differences?

Guess you’ll have to read the book to find out!
